RP’s first Open House session was held on the first Saturday of 2013. The three most noteworthy attractions which had large crowds of visitors were the Robotics exhibition showcased by the School of Engineering (SEG), mini-performances by the School of Technology for the Arts (STA) and the Social Enterprise Management booth.

RP’s robotic team has a track record boasting stellar achievements and this particular underwater Robotics exhibition was an eye-opener for majority of the audience. Nigel Poon Wei Chun, 17, commented, “RP’s SEG sparked my interest due to the robotics team as I am passionate about robotics and this creative showcase reaffirms that RP is the school for me.”

The mini-concerts held by the STA students, which the onlookers enjoyed thoroughly, gave off a vibe which paralleled that of a real concert. STA also displayed its powerful sound systems and allowed the audiences to have first-hand experience at singing with the acoustic equipment on site. Jermyn Chan, 19, said, “It was cool watching the performances put up by STA, but the feeling of standing on the mini-stage and singing was even more thrilling.”

At the Social Enterprise Management booth, social enterprise products were on display and those who visited the booth were encouraged to answer quiz questions which entitled them to a small token should they answer correctly. Social Enterprise Management is a new diploma offered by the Centre for Enterprise and Communication; amongst the many polytechnics in Singapore, RP and Ngee Ann Polytechnic (NP) are the only two that offer such a course.

Chua Zun Sheng, 18, remarked that the products are quite interesting owing to the variety. He also said, “I came to RP’s Open House to find out the difference between NP’s and RP’s Social Enterprise Management course, and after looking through the information bulletins, it seems that RP’s diploma, as compared to NP’s, adopts a more hands-on approach- which is something I want.”

3 common reasons why students choose RP over other polytechnics

  • Problem-based learning is a key feature unique to the RP curriculum, unlike secondary schools and other polytechnics, where students learn in a collaborative environment.

  • Internship is mandatory which provides a good opportunity for vocational training.

  • Paperless campus (only requires a laptop) and tests are open-book.
